So, is this why they want a younger Peter Parker?
With the big news that Marvel and Sony will be sharing the rights to Spider-Man, the fan-boy nation has been abuzz with nerdalicious excitement. But the news came with a bittersweet aftertaste for some. For yet another Peter Parker bit the dust as it was also announced that Andrew Garfield will not be reprising the role in the upcoming additions. Now, to some, this is a time of celebration. But others are becoming a bit wary that the news has a possible backlash. As I stated in a previous article, Spidey in the MCU: Does this cause more problems?, I brought up the fact that along with the good, we have to deal with a whole new reboot (hopefully not down to the origin) and a shuffling around of movie dates. That and less comic movies coming out make me a bit apprehensive. After running upon a few discussions on the internet, I became a bit more concerned.
Before I announce my concern, let me drop back and talk about the project that will most likely introduce us to this new Peter Parker: Captain America: Civil War. The sentiment toward the superhuman community was at an all-time low. Manhattan was still reeling from Nick Fury's SECRET WARS and its reprisal. Vegas was still in turmoil after being ravaged by the Hulk who killed around twenty some odd people. And the Mutant community was rocked by the loss of most of their numbers; dwindling down the 198.
Among this backdrop, the New Warriors are playing reality show; getting ready to take down a pack of 'most-wanted' super villains. Only it didn't go well. There was a massive explosion killing many innocents.
The public outcry for regulation of super-powered beings, both hero and villain, sparked the Civil War. Is this part of what Marvel plans to do with the movie? Will they set up a tragedy instigated by young, unskilled heroes? And, if so, (and here's the kicker) do they intend on making Parker one of those young, 'unskilled' heroes?
Now, this wouldn't go with cannon, but it would explain why they're looking for a MUCH younger Parker. They wouldn't need a younger version to simply have him unmask. In fact, It would have been better to keep the established Garfield in and have a 'known' face to build the drama. But they could be looking for a younger face to hook him up as a part of the NEW WARRIORS; to build him into more of the story.
Now, mind you, it is probably just that they want to establish a new face with more longevity. Or, in turn, someone who they can sign to a long term contract. Whatever it is, I will be there.
