Jackedup Review: A-Force

welcome to Arcadia.png

Secret Wars is off and running and Marvel has once again proven themselves as the innovators we know they can be. Just when you think the Marvel house of ideas is simply opting for reboot fever, the first barrage of titles comes out and dispels all doubt that this is much more than a reboot; much, much more.

Point in case, A-Force.

At first glance, you get the feeling that Marvel is simply jumping on the all girl gimmick to capture the ever growing female market. But this is not simple marketing ploy. Neither is it a feminist manifesto. There are no men haters here. In fact, it is never mentioned the reason for no men heroes at all. It is simply part of the landscape on the island of Battleworld called ARCADIA. No, after reading over this excellently written story and peering over the amazing visuals, I gather nothing more than a story of life and love much like any world. If anything is being preached, it is the will and dominance of God Emperor Doom.

Unlike the sometimes meandering Convergence titles, this stand-alone has a great deal to contribute to what is amounting to the biggest comic story of the decade. The first rule of Battleworld is laid out: the BORDERS ARE NOT TO BE CROSSED!

Can you blame him? I mean, Doom that is. Allowing the borders to be crossed at will breeds war between the domains and aids in union to rebellion. Although, I'd dare say, this very law and, as we saw in this issue, every domain's hatred of the heavy boot of Doom, will lead to the very war Doom hopes to avoid. But can even a world full of super powered beings hope to stand against a god? But I DO like She-Hulk being the baron of the district and the whole play on her judicial background! Well played Marvel!

A-Force will be a title I look forward to following. The team dynamics are intriguing. Like all of the other realities, what we see is a lifetime of relationships played out. These are deep seeded friendships. But even beyond the team of super women, we have families, lovers and friends who are simply living life. We do get a couple of easter eggs of some of the greatest loves from our Earth 616. I do believe I spotted Luke Cage and Jessica Jones pushing the baby carriage. I also saw a subtle nod to Rogue and Gambit. Along with a surprise new character! Looking forward to the reveal on her origins.

So the story isn't bereft of men; although the main characters are all women. Prince Namor and the Submariners showed up to aid the A-Force in investigating a rather interesting invasion of a prehistoric shark. Can't wait to see what that's about. And, of course, Doom's Thor Corp showed up playing Battleworld police.

All in all, a good story that has great potential. So, guys especially, get over the whole 'all girl' thing and pick it up! It's a great read and you'll be glad you did!
